Mo te turanga | About the role

As a Financial Trader, you'll play a key role in supporting Meridian's trading activity and helping optimise our energy portfolio. Sitting within the Origination team, this role blends market insight, data, and trading execution in a fast-moving environment.

This is a role that can flex depending on your experience. You might be building your trading capability, or already bring experience and are looking to deepen your impact. Either way, you'll work closely with experienced traders to execute trades, understand market dynamics, and contribute to data-informed decision-making.

You'll operate with increasing autonomy over time; owning parts of the portfolio, contributing to trading strategy, and helping Meridian respond to a complex and evolving energy market. There's also opportunity to build capability across different trading approaches, including more automated and data-driven ways of working.

• Trade in real time to execute electricity derivatives and respond to market movements.
• Shape trading positions to support or lead hedging strategies that drive performance.
• Stay close to risk and exposure, balancing opportunity with discipline.
• Turn market, portfolio and customer data into insights and actions.
• Spot trends early to know what's moving the market and why.
• Lift how we trade to improve tools, systems, and ways of working.
• Work with Digital and Data to sharpen analytics and decision-making.
• Contribute to pricing, deals, and product thinking.
• Build strong relationships across the business.

• Experience in trading, finance, energy markets, or a strong analytical field.
• You have strong numerical thinking skills and are comfortable working with data and making calls based on your analysis.
• Good judgement and problem-solving, especially when things are moving quickly.
• Able to work independently.
• You're a clear communicator and can turn complexity into something practical.
• You work well with others and build trust.
• A mindset for improving how things are done (automation, analytics, efficiency).
• Experience (or curiosity) in tools like Python or SQL.
