About the role

We are the leading provider of ferry services in the Auckland region, offering commuter and tourist passenger ferry services to the beautiful islands of the Hauraki Gulf. As a Skipper, you will play a vital role in providing safe, efficient, and enjoyable experiences for our passengers.


Reporting to the Crew Manager, this role is tasked with ensuring an outstanding experience and safe journey for our customers. This includes ensuring our vessels are well maintained, and all crew onboard are trained and operating at a high standard.


You'll be a real champion of the customer experience, and motivate your crew to go above and beyond.


Hours of work:

  • Rotating roster (no set pattern) including public holidays and weekends
  • No set pattern, usually 5 days on and 2 days off
  • 120 hours over a 3-week period, average of 40 hours per week
  • Shifts fall between the hours of 4.30am - 2am (morning, afternoon and night shifts)
  • Morning shifts start between 4.30am - 8.30am and night shifts finish between 10pm - 2am


About your tasks and responsibilities

  • Safe and efficient running of the vessels, leading your crew to a high standard and motivating them to work as a team
  • Provide crew training and guidance to keep elevating the customer experience as well as set the crew up for career progression;
  • Provide excellent customer service to your passengers and lead passenger & crew safety on board
  • Perform day-to-day upkeep on your vessel
  • Uphold clear and transparent communication with the Ops team and other departments for a smooth operation


About your background, skills and qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years Skipper experienceon fast ferries or high speed vessels or high volume passenger experience is essential
  • A current New Zealand SRL or Chief Mate certificate, with endorsementsfor vessels over 24 meters, vessels <500GT, (HSE) high speed endorsement or higher skippers ticket (OR Australian equivalent) (24m, Pax, 500GT, HSE)
  • A current New Zealand Marine Engineering MEC5ticket is highly advantageous
  • You MUST have the right to work in NZ to be considered for this role

  • You have a proven track record and ability to successfully lead and support your crew

This position is on a rotating roster which includes weekends and public holidays.


* Due to the nature of shift work involved, applicants are required to have a full driver's license and their own transport unless based in Auckland CBD.
