Information Specialist L3 - Matanga Parongo - Content Architect

  • Design, refine, deliver and manage the content architecture for the main ird.govt.nz website
  • Permanent, full-time role, Wellington-based

The main Inland Revenue (www.ird.govt.nz) website is the most visited government website in Aotearoa after the Met Service. The website was built with the vision of being simple, clear, and easy to use.

Use your expertise in managing large, complex user-centred websites, W3C and NZ government web standards to ensure that people across the motu have easy access to the information they need. You will be in a role critical to ensuring that our solutions meet real-world requirements and delivers sustainable value to IR and its customers.

Mo te tunga | About the role

As a Content Architect, you will need to establish and maintain credibility with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the intent and long-term integrity of the content architecture is maintained.

In this role, you will support and advise the end-to-end management of content in relation to the content architecture, from production through to distribution, in collaboration with members of the Writing & Web Content Design (WWCD) team. You will also support the capability uplift of all parties in user-centred design approaches.

Your responsibilities would also include:

  • Managing the content architecture of all areas of the main website through collaboration with the WWCD team and your colleagues in the Digital Product Experience (DPEx) team.
  • Champion and maintain the IR website content model.
  • Applying user insights and analytics in all design decisions to ensure the content structure is focused on user needs.
  • Supporting the implementation of metadata and taxonomy for the content architecture.
  • Defining the technical requirements for the implementation of the content architecture in Sitecore and working closely with developers, visual designers and user researchers to realise these requirements.
  • Participating in existing Agile ceremonies for prioritisation and coordinate work planning for the content architecture in line with the channel backlog.
  • Documenting content types and the relationships between other content types and users and any other devices or sites and ensure this is maintained and updated as required.
  • Supporting the decision-making structure and governance of the content architecture in line with the www.ird.govt.nz content governance strategy in collaboration with the WWCD team
  • Championing the content architecture across the organisation through communication and collaboration with the various involved parties.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Ability to think strategically and act tactically, with excellent written and verbal communication, including simplifying complex information.
  • Proven experience organising and structuring content to support user needs and improve findability.
  • Experience applying taxonomy and ontology to structured content.
  • Experience designing content to be machine-readable and suitable for APIs, with an understanding of how AI systems consume and process content.
  • Ability to draw insights from analytics (for example, Google Analytics) to inform content decisions.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise content management systems, content architecture, and information standards.
  • Experience implementing process and technology changes, including content or data migration, in digital environments (ideally within government).
  • Experience working with content teams on editorial planning, managing schedules, and writing for the web.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to energise and influence a wide range of people to achieve outcomes.
  • Experience working in Agile environments, with the ability to operate in ambiguity, stay focused, and take an iterative approach to delivery.
