The University of Waikato is seeking a visionary academic leader to become the next Dean of Te Aka Matuatua, School of Science. This is a pivotal opportunity to set the strategic and intellectual direction of a dynamic, forward-looking School recognised for world-class research that addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing New Zealand and the globe.

Part of the Division of STEM, Te Wananga Putaiao, the School brings together a vibrant community of researchers and educators across Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Ecology and Biodiversity, Environmental Sciences, Marine Sciences, and Molecular and Cellular Biology, delivered across the Hamilton and Tauranga campuses. The School is distinguished by its commitment to collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and communities, and by a deep engagement with matauranga Maori that enriches both research and teaching.

The opportunity

As Dean, you will provide academic leadership and strategic direction, championing a shared vision of research excellence and impact. You will:

  • Set a compelling academic vision that drives research excellence, innovation, and national and international leadership.

  • Foster a high-performing, inclusive culture that empowers staff and students to excel.

  • Lead the stewardship of people, resources, and programmes across teaching, postgraduate education, and research.

  • Pursue opportunities for growth in student recruitment, strategic partnerships, and diversified funding.

  • Build strong relationships with industry, government, iwi, and community partners to expand the School's influence and impact.

As a key member of the Division's Leadership Team, you will work collaboratively with the Pro Vice-Chancellor and fellow Deans to advance shared goals and strengthen the University's reputation for outstanding science.

About you

You are an accomplished academic with a PhD in a discipline relevant to the School, a significant research record with a national and international reputation, and a strong track record of tertiary teaching. You bring demonstrated experience in academic leadership and in managing people within a diverse and complex environment, along with sound financial and resource management capability. Experience at Associate Professor or Professor level and significant administrative experience within a School, Faculty, or Division would be a distinct advantage.Above all, you are a collaborative, strategic leader who builds trust, develops others, and shares the University's commitment to partnership with Maori, integrity, diversity, and creativity.
