Nga korero mo te turanga - About the role
Join Te Aka Matuatua School of Science and become part of a dedicated technical team that plays a vital role in supporting high-quality teaching and learning. This hands-on position is responsible for ensuring laboratories are safe, well-maintained, and ready for teaching activities through laboratory cleaning, glassware washing, waste disposal, stock management, and the upkeep of laboratory facilities and equipment.
Working alongside a team of skilled technicians, each with their own specialist areas, you will contribute to a collaborative and supportive environment where teamwork and flexibility are highly valued. In addition to providing core laboratory support, you will assist with teaching-related technical activities and provide backup support for Science Store operations, including the receipt, storage, distribution, and inventory management of laboratory consumables, equipment, and teaching resources.
Salary will be in the range of $60,046 to $72,636 per year based on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position. This is a full-time role (37.5 hours a week), based at our Hillcrest Campus, Hamilton.

You will have a science qualification or relevant experience in a scientific or laboratory environment. You will have good communication and ICT skills, a sound understanding of health and safety practices, and experience using or maintaining laboratory equipment. Most importantly, you are proactive, approachable, and committed to providing excellent service while helping to maintain safe, efficient, and well-functioning laboratories.
You are a well-organised and reliable team player with a positive, customer-focused approach. You have good attention to detail, can manage your time effectively, and enjoy working in a practical laboratory environment supporting teaching activities. You are adaptable, willing to learn new skills, and able to contribute to a collaborative team that works together to deliver high-quality support for staff and students. Experience with physical containment facilities or autoclave operation would be advantageous.

The Division of STEM, The Division of Science, Engineering and Computing comprises the Schools of Te Aka Matuatua Science, Te Kura Mata-Ao Engineering and Au Reikura Computing and Mathematical Sciences. The Division also has several research units, including the Environmental Research Institute and commercial/equipment units which embody staff and research activities.
