About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Portfolio Manager to lead the successful delivery of complex IT programmes and portfolios within a government customer environment. In this role, you'll oversee governance, delivery assurance, financial management, stakeholder engagement, and portfolio performance across multiple interdependent initiatives.
You'll work closely with senior customer stakeholders, delivery teams, vendors, and internal service lines to ensure programmes are aligned to strategic outcomes, delivered to agreed standards, and effectively managed from inception through to implementation.
This is a senior leadership role suited to someone who thrives in complex enterprise environments, brings strong commercial and delivery capability, and has a proven background managing large-scale technology portfolios within government sectors.
Our offices are based in Wellington. This role is onsite only and requires regular in-person collaboration with both the customer and Datacom teams.
What you'll do
At the moment, as Portfolio Manager you will be focused on:
Leading governance and assurance practices across complex IT programmes and portfolios
Managing a portfolio of large-scale applications and infrastructure projects
Providing oversight of risks, issues, dependencies, financials, reporting, and delivery outcomes Coordinating multiple programme streams to provide a single portfolio view for stakeholders
Driving portfolio planning, scheduling, resource management, and prioritisation activities
Undertaking portfolio health checks and assurance reviews to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture and delivery methodologies
Building trusted relationships with government stakeholders, vendors, and internal teams
Leading continuous improvement initiatives across portfolio delivery practices
Supporting and mentoring programme and project delivery teams
Ensuring contractual obligations, governance requirements, and quality standards are achieved

What you'll bring
Required experience:
Minimum 15 years' experience across project management, programme management, and portfolio management within Information Technology
Recent experience leading complex IT programmes or portfolios in enterprise environments
Proven experience working with Government Agencies
Strong understanding of portfolio governance, risk management, financial oversight, and delivery assurance frameworks
Demonstrated experience managing large, complex infrastructure and applications projects
Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence at senior levels
Experience leading teams in fast-paced, multi-stream delivery environments
Strong commercial, analytical, and strategic thinking capability
New Zealand Citizenship is required due to the nature of the customer environment
Ability to complete and pass government clearance and police check processes prior to employment
Wellington-based and available to work onsite with the customer and Datacom teams
Nice to have:
PRINCE2, PMP, MSP, Agile or other relevant project/programme management certifications
Experience with enterprise architecture alignment and IT governance frameworks
Experience within large enterprise or professional services environments
MBA or relevant tertiary qualification in IT, Business, Engineering, or related discipline
