Job Description

Nelson Hospital is looking for three permanent full‑time Anaesthetists (1.0 FTE) to join our perioperative team. This role offers a rewarding career with a healthy work‑life balance in one of New Zealand’s most sought‑after regions.

About the Role

As a key member of our Anaesthesia team, you will deliver high‑quality perioperative care across a range of surgical specialties. Your responsibilities include:

  • Participating in the anaesthetic roster, covering planned care and acute theatre sessions
  • Providing anaesthesia after‑hours on‑call support and duty anaesthetist duties
  • Managing anaesthetic pre‑assessment clinics
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of 17 experienced consultants, SMO colleagues, ANZCA trainees, surgical and ICU staff

You will work within a secondary care setting and contribute to both elective and acute care, ensuring safe and effective patient outcomes. The role requires 80 hours per fortnight (1.0 FTE).

About the Team / Service / Location

Nelson’s Anaesthesia team includes experienced consultants, ANZCA trainees, skilled anaesthetic technicians, and registered nurse assistants. The service supports a wide range of departments such as Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dental, Mental Health, and the Emergency department. We also provide anaesthesia for visiting subspecialty surgeons in Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastics, and Maxillofacial Surgery.

About You
  • Clinically experienced in a provincial hospital setting
  • Eligible for an Annual Practicing Certificate with vocational scope in Anaesthesia with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Hold Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent
