Job Description
Southern Cross Health Insurance is shaping a healthier Aotearoa New Zealand. Our purpose is simple: empowering our members to live well for longer. We're here to give peace of mind through timely access to quality care, inspire healthier living, and lead positive change across the health system. As a New Zealand-owned, member-based organisation, we're building a future where wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do — delivering exceptional value for our members and creating an environment where our people thrive. Now is an exciting time to join us. You'll be part of a high-performing, values-driven team where people are at the heart of everything we do — and in return for your talent, you'll have the opportunity to grow, make an impact, and be proud of the difference your work makes.
About the RoleAs a Security Engineer at Southern Cross, you'll be hands‑on in protecting the technology environment that our members depend on. You're joining at an exciting time as we invest in an uplift of our security operations capability, bringing new technology and new ways of working. You'll play a key role in shaping how it lands: getting involved in onboarding and early customisation, then driving the longer‑term tuning and continuous improvement that follows.
What You'll Do- Take an active, hands‑on role in the onboarding, customisation, and ongoing tuning of new security technology as we uplift our security operations capability.
- Monitor, administer, and troubleshoot cyber defence systems – IDS/IPS, antivirus, web filtering, and beyond.
- Maintain and optimise rules, signatures, and configurations across security platforms.

- Work proactively with value streams and technology teams to reduce exposure to known vulnerabilities.
- Contribute to our security community of practice through knowledge sharing, policy consistency, and SOPs.
- Proven experience as a Security Engineer – you’ve done this work before and can hit the ground running.
- Previous experience with Palo Alto, Microsoft and PAM technology is desirable.
- Strong networking experience and deep networking knowledge, alongside familiarity with network security controls and secure configuration.
- Strong technical grounding in cybersecurity principles, threats, and defensive methodologies, including malware protection and system hardening.
- Familiarity with incident response, risk management, and NZ cybersecurity and privacy regulations.
- Sharp troubleshooting skills; you're driven to find the problem, not just the symptom.
- An appetite for change – you're energised by new technology, solving problems through transition periods, and improving how things work rather than just maintaining the status quo.
- A collaborative approach where you share what you know and work well across teams and disciplines.
- Five days of wellbeing leave per year
- Health insurance for you and your immediate whānau
- Life insurance cover and discounts on pet and travel insurance
- Extra parental leave benefits and financial wellbeing support
