About the Role

Are you a skilled legal professional with a proven track record in solving complex legal issues? Join our Business Registries (BR) Operational Legal Services Team as a Senior Investigating Solicitor and contribute to supporting the integrity of New Zealand's business environment. As a Senior Investigating Solicitor, you will provide expert legal and administrative advice to the Insolvency and Trustee Service (ITS) team, guiding them through estate issues and other critical legal matters. Your role will also involve collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance and effective application of relevant legislation.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver technical, legal, and administrative advice to ITS staff on estate issues
  • Represent the Official Assignee in court proceedings
  • Provide legal guidance on matters relevant to Business Registries operations
  • Collaborate with government agencies, suppliers and other stakeholders to support organisational goals
  • Analyse complex legal challenges, develop solutions and ensure compliance with relevant legislation
  • Write clear, concise legal opinions on a range of intricate legal matters
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Skills and Experience Required
  • Tertiary qualification in law and admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor with a current practising certificate.
  • A minimum of 3 years post‑admission experience.
  • Ability to understand and apply relevant legislation.
  • Well‑developed analytical thinking and problem‑solving ability.
  • Courtroom experience is preferred.
  • Capable of developing alternative pathways to achieving outcomes.
  • Identifies key issues or required actions and develops workable solutions to complex problems.
  • Critically evaluates options and makes effective decisions in spite of constraints such as time pressure or incomplete information.
  • Well‑developed planning and organising skills, including ability to maintain performance when under pressure and appropriate prioritising of work.
  • Ability to write clearly and succinctly on a range of complex legal issues.
  • Ability to positively influence internal and external stakeholders, and earn their respect, trust and confidence.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to balance statutory and technical issues and present them with simplicity and clarity that can be understood by a range of audiences.
  • Confident and persuasive communicator.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
