Role Overview

General Practitioners (GPs) needed across the West Coast as part of the Rural Generalist Team. The role offers a broad clinical scope in rural communities, delivering primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics and obstetrics/gynecology.

About Us

The West Coast of the South Island is rugged, isolated, and beautiful, with a population of 32,500. The community operates a Rural Generalist Model to ensure equitable, high‑level care. The team is flexible, multi‑disciplinary and highly skilled, offering unique career development opportunities.

Responsibilities
  • Provide primary, urgent, emergency, general, paediatric, orthopaedic and obstetric/gynecology care within a rural generalist framework.
  • Collaborate with in‑house specialists (psychiatry, anaesthetics, general surgery and obstetrics/gynecology) and TransAlpine partners for specialist support and tertiary transfers.
  • Engage in community and rural hospital‑based services, fostering a supportive environment for both patients and staff.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and career progression as part of Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand.
Skills & Experience
  • Vocationally registered GP or on the pathway to achieving this status.
  • Ability to gain registration with the New Zealand Medical Council (see https://www.mcnz.org.nz/registration/).
