About the Role

As a Consultant Inpatient Psychiatrist, you will play a key role in the assessment and management of patients, developing and implementing comprehensive treatment programmes that address psychological, social, and medication needs. You will also ensure effective follow‑up and continuity of care within a regional secondary care service. The position offers a varied and rewarding caseload across a broad range of acute mental health conditions, with opportunities to contribute to service development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and clinical education. This is a permanent full‑time 1.0 FTE (80 hours a fortnight) role that includes participation in on‑call and after‑hours rosters.

About the Team / Service / Location

The Nelson Mental Health & Addictions Service provides a comprehensive range of services across inpatient, community, and specialist care. The inpatient unit offers acute care for adults experiencing significant mental health challenges, with a focus on recovery‑oriented and trauma‑informed practice. There are two full‑time consultant psychiatrists, each leading multi‑disciplinary teams providing acute inpatient support. The 25‑bed purpose‑built acute inpatient unit in Nelson serves the adult inpatient needs of the district and is well‑integrated with community teams and primary care providers, ensuring continuity of care and strong regional support networks.

About you

The ideal applicant will:

  • Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, or equivalent.
  • Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
  • Have experience working as a consultant in an inpatient psychiatry unit, including managing voluntary and involuntary in‑patients and providing treatment to individuals suffering from mental health and addictive disorders.
  • Fit into a cohesive team culture of collaborative practice, openness, humour, and respect across disciplines.
  • Demonstrate collegiality and collaboration across all disciplines, key to providing successful services to patients and the community.
