About the role

Starship Child Health (Auckland), the leading provider of child health care in New Zealand and the South Pacific, has an exciting opportunity for a 12‑month fixed term, full‑time position for a Fellow – Paediatric Haematology/Oncology in its Blood and Cancer Service. This role aims to provide high‑quality Paediatric Haematology/Oncology practice in inpatient, outpatient and outreach settings, undertake and/or participate in research activities appropriate to the service, supervise junior medical staff and ensure they are accountable for their practice and performance, and participate in on‑call roster with other Paediatric Haematology/Oncology staff. Relocation assistance is provided and the expected commencement is February 2027.

About the Team / Service / Location

The Starship Blood and Cancer Centre serves a population of over 3 million and is located within Starship Child Health, Grafton, Auckland. The centre provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment and long‑term follow‑up for children and adolescents with cancer and non‑malignant haematological conditions. The service is multidisciplinary, involving nurses, doctors, social workers, play specialists, teachers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, Māori Support Liaison, Pacific Island support workers, child psychologists and psychiatrists. The acute component involves initial diagnosis and management, treatment of therapy complications and assessment during treatment; the chronic component includes long‑term follow‑up for recurrence and late effects. Palliative care attends to the physical and psychological needs of dying children and their families. The service also provides a comprehensive Haemopoietic Stem Cell (Bone Marrow Transplant and Cord Blood) Transplant service for NewZealand and manages a range of non‑malignant haematological conditions. The successful applicant will work within a large multidisciplinary team that includes 11 SMOs, with responsibilities in inpatient and outpatient clinical work, supervision and teaching of junior staff, and protected time for a designated research project.

About you

This role is suitable for an advanced trainee in Paediatrics who may wish to subspecialise in haematology or oncology, or for an individual who anticipates regional general paediatric practice with an interest in shared care for haematology/oncology patients. To be successful you must be registered with the Medical Council of NewZealand and be registered or eligible for General Registration. Applicants must be eligible to work in NewZealand. Preference is given to NewZealand citizens and residents, though overseas candidates are welcome.
