Clinical Nurse Specialist - FSA Cardiothoracic
Job Description
Waikato Hospital, Hamilton – Fixed term for 14 months to cover parental leave. Part‑time position (up to 0.8 FTE).
We are looking for a First Surgical Assist Registered Nurse (FSA‑RN) to join our cardiothoracic Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team. This role will focus on pre‑operative assessments and patient education, assist with cardiothoracic surgery, lead endoscopic vessel harvesting, and support perioperative development across the cardiothoracic service.
Key responsibilities- Undertake pre‑operative assessments and patient, whanau education for those requiring cardiac surgery.
- Assist with cardiothoracic surgery.
- Lead endoscopic vessel harvesting.
- Support perioperative development across the cardiothoracic service.
The CNS‑FSAs are an integral part of the cardiothoracic team at Waikato Hospital. The team supports the perioperative service for cardiothoracic surgery, performing endoscopic harvesting of veins and arteries to reduce wound infection rates and post‑operative pain. The service offers a supportive team and ongoing educational support, with a focus on developing the team and service.
About you – Required skills & experience- Registered Nurse with minimum 5 years experience.
- Current experience as a First Surgical Assist, or undertaking the FSA RN qualification.
- Knowledge and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Current practising certificate.
- Post‑graduate qualification or working towards one.
- Completed a Professional Development and Recognition Programme at proficient or above.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Adaptability, flexibility and agility.
