This role is an opportunity to develop practical legal and regulatory expertise in a supportive team, while contributing to the integrity of New Zealand’s business registers.

\n

The Senior Legal Technical Advisor works across varied regulatory and operational matters within Operational Legal Services and Business Registries (Companies Office). The work may include PPSR matters, Official Information Act and Privacy Act requests, NZBN‑related matters, complaints and enquiries, director prohibitions under the Companies Act 1993, and other regulatory or register‑related work as priorities require.

You do not need to come with experience in every area. We are looking for someone who is comfortable interpreting and applying legislation, curious about how registers operate, and keen to build capability in a practical legal and regulatory environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Work across a range of regulatory and operational matters within Operational Legal Services and Business Registries
  • \n
  • Review information, identify key issues, and help determine practical next steps
  • \n
  • Prepare clear written material, including correspondence, responses, reports, and internal guidance
  • \n
  • Contribute to improving operational processes, procedures, and guidance for regulatory and register‑related work
  • \n
  • Interpret and apply practical knowledge across areas such as PPSR, NZBN, Companies Register matters, director Prohibitions, and other regulatory or register‑related work
  • \n
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to clarify issues, gather information, and support timely outcomes
  • \n
\nSkills and Experience Required\n
    \n
  • A tertiary qualification, with transferable analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills
  • \n
  • Curiosity, good judgment, and the ability to work through information carefully
  • \n
  • The willingness and ability to interpret and apply legislation in practical operational settings
  • \n
  • Confidence working with systems and information, or the ability to learn new systems quickly
  • \n
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain information clearly and accurately
  • \n
  • The ability to manage priorities, follow work through to completion, and ask for support when needed
  • \n
  • Experience in a regulatory, compliance, legal support, government, operational, analytical, or commercial environment would be useful
  • \n
  • Experience with statutory registers such as PPSR, NZBN, or similar systems would be helpful but is not essential
  • \n
  • A legal background, or previous experience interpreting and applying legislation, is helpful but not required
