Senior Software Engineer - Oracle

Southern Cross is New Zealand’s largest health insurer. Our engineering teams build and maintain the systems that make that possible. We are looking for 2 senior software engineers with deep Oracle expertise to join two squads.

• Design, build and maintain Oracle database solutions, writing complex PL/SQL procedures, packages and queries.
\n
• Actively participate in agile squad ceremonies and code reviews.
\n
• Identify and resolve production issues, using logging and monitoring tooling to diagnose problems and prevent recurrence.
\n
• Contribute to data modelling and design discussions, shaping how we build as well as what we build.
\n
• Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement through incremental enhancements to performance, security and maintainability.

• 5+ years of hands‑on Oracle PL/SQL and SQL development experience, including writing complex procedures, packages and queries.
\n
• An engineer’s mindset – participate in code reviews and think about testability and maintainability.
\n
• Experience debugging and resolving production issues in Oracle environments, including root cause analysis and permanent fixes.
\n
• Enough data modelling experience to contribute meaningfully to schema design conversations.
\n
• Track record of working in agile teams – sprint ceremonies, collaborative delivery, shared responsibility.
\n
• Strong communication skills.
\n
• Good to have: experience with JSON handling and complex data model design, familiarity with SQL Server, exposure to ETL tools or data integration patterns, health insurance or other regulated domain experience.

Work in a modern engineering practice evolving toward a model where engineers are problem solvers first and tool specialists second. Oracle and PL/SQL are your primary domain, but you’ll have opportunities to broaden your skills through communities of practice and cross‑squad collaboration. The Oracle database infrastructure is managed by a third‑party partner, so you won’t be responsible for DBA functions such as backups, patching or instance management.
