About the role\n

The Greater Wellington Region incorporates the Tararua, Horowhenua, Kāpiti, Porirua, Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. As Strategic Advisor, Māori, you are a key member of our regional leadership team, providing thought leadership and expertise to inform and shape strategies, work programmes and complex system issues aimed at accelerating Māori educational achievement.

Working with our nine iwi partners and other Māori organisations, you will ensure Māori needs and aspirations are at the forefront of decision‑making and promote Māori identity, language and culture. This role actively supports the Director of Education in leading iwi and Māori stakeholder engagements. Given our proximity to parliament, we also receive and respond to requests to support wider mahi, including engagements with Ministers.

Salary range: $.119,171 - $.144,560 per annum + kiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

Responsibilities\n

  • Provide thought leadership and expertise to inform and shape strategies, work programmes and complex system issues for accelerating Māori educational achievement.
  • \n
  • Ensure Māori needs and aspirations are at the forefront of decision‑making and promote Māori identity, language and culture.
  • \n
  • Support the Director of Education in leading iwi and Māori stakeholder engagements.
  • \n
  • Respond to requests to support wider mahi, including engagements with Ministers.
  • \n
  • Support procurement and contracting activities.
  • \n
Qualifications\n
    \n
  • Experience at a leadership level, ideally in a complex organisation.
  • \n
  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and organisational change.
  • \n
  • Build strong relationships and partnerships with iwi and Māori organisations.
  • \n
  • Possess sound political awareness and ability to navigate government processes.
  • \n
  • Communicate effectively/fluently in Te Reo Māori when required.
  • \n
  • Provide cultural support to ensure tikanga Māori is respected in engagements.
  • \n
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, data‑driven decision‑making capability, and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • \n
  • Willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

Benefits\n

Salary range: $119,171 - $144,560 per annum plus kiwiSaver contributions.
