CAD Systems Engineering Specialist

About Us
We believe the way the world builds needs to change.

Most buildings are still built the same way they have been for generations - timber frames, cut on-site, by tradespeople who are harder to find every year. It's slow, wasteful, and unpredictable.

Steel framing, designed in software and manufactured in a factory, changes that. Precise, fast, and weather-independent - this is modern construction, and it's where the industry is heading.

FRAMECAD makes it possible. Our ecosystem connects every stage - design software, roll-forming machines, production management, components, and support. One connected system, from digital file to finished structure.

We've been building this for almost 40 years, and our technology is trusted across 120+ countries. But the most exciting chapter is just beginning. The global shift to offsite manufacturing is accelerating - and FRAMECAD is growing fast to meet it.

About the Role
This role sits at the intersection of structural engineering practice and software product development within the Steelwise team. The specialist will strengthen our engineering verification capability and contribute directly to the refinement of the Steelwise software platform by:

  • Planning and conducting engineering tests that validate the technical accuracy and structural compliance of Steelwise outputs.

  • Translating engineering domain knowledge into well-formed user stories and acceptance criteria that can be implemented by software developers or AI-assisted development pipelines.

  • Acting as a bridge between structural engineering principles and the product development team, ensuring that software capability accurately reflects real-world engineering practice.

This is a fixed term position for 3 months, with the opportunity for an extension as required.

Key Responsibilities

You'll design, document, and execute engineering test cases that verify the structural and computational accuracy of Steelwise's outputs - covering CFS member design, connection checks, load path verification, and compliance with NZS, AS, AISI, and Eurocode standards. This includes producing clear defect reports, working with QA to integrate engineering tests into the broader test suite, and maintaining traceability between test cases, standards, and features. You'll also apply your knowledge of cold-formed steel design standards to assess the correctness of engineering logic, flag any divergence from standards or industry practice, and help build out internal documentation of design rules and calculation methodologies.

Alongside this, you'll work with product owners and engineers to translate engineering requirements into precise, testable user stories with clear acceptance criteria - capturing computational intent, boundary conditions, and relevant standards references - and support backlog refinement for both developers and AI-assisted workflows. You'll review implemented features against engineering intent, collaborate closely with the CAD Systems software engineering team during feature development, and work with Building Systems structural engineering to validate test assumptions against real-world use, staying actively involved in sprint refinement, planning, and review sessions.

Skills and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 3-6 years of experience in structural engineering, with demonstrated involvement in computational or software-assisted design workflows.
  • Working knowledge of cold-formed steel design standards.
  • Experience producing structured test documentation, verification reports, or engineering calculation packages.
  • Ability to interpret, critique, and articulate engineering logic in written form suitable for software implementation.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, particularly in numerical verification and standards interpretation.

Desirable

  • Direct experience with FRAMECAD Steelwise, Detailer, or equivalent CFS design software.
  • Exposure to software product development processes, particularly agile/scrum methodologies.
  • Experience writing user stories, acceptance criteria, or functional specifications for engineering software.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows, IFC standards, or structural CAD environments.
  • Understanding of AI-assisted software development tools and prompt-based feature specification.

What we offer:

As well as the opportunity to work with our amazing team, we offer a great modern office environment, a competitive base salary, an on-site gym, KiwiSaver scheme, catering and refreshments regularly, and all of the support you will need to be successful in this role.
