This is a hands-on maritime role involving on-water patrols, compliance activity, public education, vessel operations, aids to navigation (AtoNs) maintenance and support of Operation Neptune and other maritime safety initiatives. If you have a strong maritime background, enjoy interacting with people, and have experience or an interest in boating and maintaining safety on our waterways, come rain or shine, then this is the job for you. Key responsibilities include: Conduct on-water patrols and compliance activities. Educate water users and promote safe boating behaviour. Regularly work outdoors and in unpredictable weather conditions. Provide operational support to other organisations or individuals and appropriately prioritise that support. Assess information, maintain aids to navigation and identify navigation safety issues. Support boating events and Operation Neptune activities. Participate in the duty officer roster, attending to calls outside normal work hours and being available to work weekends and public holidays when required. We're looking for someone with a practical maritime background who enjoys working with people and making a positive difference in their community. You'll bring: A strong boating background and passion for maritime safety. Experience working in a regulatory, operational or compliance environment. Methodical work practices and a high level of attention to detail. Highly effective organisational skills including time management, prioritising and forward planning skills. Strong communication and report writing skills. A practical approach to problem solving and working outdoors in varying conditions. A high level of commitment to health and safety in the workplace for yourself and others. Extensive boating experience and the ability to demonstrate safe vessel operation. Hold, or be willing and able to obtain, a Maritime New Zealand Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) qualification. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong computer literacy and administrative skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Mō te tīma | About the team The Maritime Services team is responsible for promoting and maintaining safety across the Waikato region's coastal and inland waterways. Work alongside a supportive team of Maritime Officers, Harbourmasters and maritime specialists who are passionate about improving safety outcomes across the Waikato region. Our team delivers a diverse range of activities including: Navigation safety education and compliance. Aids to navigation maintenance and management. Operation Neptune and seasonal safety programmes. Maritime incident response and operational support. Support for boating events and waterway users throughout the region.
