About the Role We are looking for 2 x Senior Data Analysts to join the Data Service Delivery (DSD) unit and lead MBIE’s energy modelling work. The role is ideal for someone seeking to progress in analytics, overseeing large and complex projects in the energy sector, managing a robust and compelling evidence base, and shaping policy decisions. Responsibilities Lead the delivery of a robust evidence base to inform key policy decisions in the energy sector. Manage a complex modelling and analytical work programme, ensuring effective delivery of the Ministry’s energy modelling services. Lead the ongoing development of core modelling tools and methods. Analyse potential futures of energy supply, demand, and greenhouse emissions. Produce analysis and evidence to inform policy development, design, and monitoring. Translate policy requirements into effective analytical solutions. Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders across MBIE, government, and the energy sector. Champion innovation and continuous improvement to keep modelling tools fit for purpose. Qualifications & Skills Significant experience in classical modelling, forecasting, econometrics, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated ability to apply modelling and forecasting to real‑world problems in public or private sectors. Strong analytical skills with complex data handling and clear communication to technical and non‑technical audiences. Experience leading analytical projects, managing delivery, and collaborating with stakeholders. Prior work with policy teams or in providing analysis for policy development or monitoring is advantageous. Background in economics or applied economics is beneficial. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in R or a comparable statistical programming language. Self‑starting, collaborative approach capable of delivering high‑quality results under pressure and in a changing environment. Legal right to live and work in New Zealand. Team Context The Domains team in the DSD unit supports policy analysis, regulatory monitoring, and decision‑making by delivering high‑quality, trusted data assets across five portfolio‑aligned data domains. The Data Science team partners with Domains by applying advanced analytics, statistical modelling, and machine learning to solve complex problems. This role reports to the Lead Domain Analyst (Markets) / Data Science Manager. The Markets Domain sub‑team is responsible for the energy and resources portfolios, covering the entire data pipeline from primary data collection to generating insights for decision‑making.
