Job Description
About the role New Zealand Police are looking for a dynamic, self‑motivated, professional staff member to join the District Forensic Team as a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) based at Henderson. The role is permanent, full‑time and involves working with an energetic team to examine a range of volume crime and other scenes to preserve all relevant evidence. Key responsibilities include: Secure and preserve crime scenes by establishing cordons and preventing contamination to ensure integrity of evidence. Conduct thorough forensic examinations including photography, fingerprinting, trace, biological and impression evidence at a variety of volume crime scenes. Package, label and maintain a clear chain of custody for all collected evidence and submit it to forensic laboratories for analysis. Complete comprehensive documentation of all scene actions and evidence. Attend post‑mortems and other specialist operations as directed, assisting with forensic procedures such as fingerprinting the deceased when required. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to manage scene logistics and maintain procedural standards. Provide public‑facing engagement at scenes offering prevention advice, reassurance and clear communication with victims and bystanders. Prepare detailed court statements, exhibit materials and give testimony in court as required, supporting legal proceedings. Operate solo in the field, applying sound judgment and initiative while working independently on assigned shifts including nights, weekends and public holidays. Maintain operational readiness through regular health, ongoing training and equipment maintenance in line with District standards. Shifts cover North/East and West areas with a mix of supervisors and constabulary staff; shifts are early (7‑3pm / 9‑5pm) and late (12‑8pm) as part of a 4‑week roster including weekends and public holidays. Operational readiness includes preparation for overtime in rare circumstances. Benefits Salaries are set by collective agreement and range from $69,337 to $87,306, dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
