Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity Join Downer's Greenspaces team in Tauriko and play an important role in maintaining high‑quality parks, reserves, and cemetery facilities for the local community. This unique position combines mowing and grounds maintenance with cemetery operations, making it ideal for someone who enjoys outdoor work, takes pride in presentation, and values delivering exceptional service to the public. As a Mower Operator / Sexton, you'll help create and maintain respectful, well‑presented spaces while working closely with funeral directors, families, and the wider community. No two days are the same, with responsibilities ranging from operating machinery and maintaining grounds through to preparing burial sites and supporting interment services. Your day‑to‑day responsibilities will include: Operating tractors, ride‑on mowers, weed eaters and other grounds maintenance equipment Maintaining cemetery grounds to a high standard Preparing, attending, and reinstating plots for burials and ash interments Liaising professionally with funeral directors and members of the public Supporting wider Greenspaces operations as required Participating in occasional weekend work Ngā pūkenga matua | Important Skills We're looking for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in their work, and can provide excellent service during sensitive community interactions. You will ideally bring: Full Class 1 Driver Licence and WTR endorsement Class 2 licence (highly desirable) Experience operating excavators and carrying out excavation work Experience in cemetery operations or burial services (preferred but training can be provided) Experience operating tractors and ride‑on mowing equipment Strong communication and customer service skills A positive attitude and willingness to support the wider team A strong commitment to health, safety and quality Reliability, self‑motivation and a high standard of workmanship Downer Group is an employer that acknowledges and embraces the importance of our people's diverse experiences, talents, and cultures.
