Job Description
Location Wellington Regional Hospital Contract Full time, 12 months fixed term – starting 1 February 2027. Salary As per ASMS SECA. About the role We are looking for an applicant who has either completed their general surgical training or will complete their training in 2026 to achieve FRACS. The fellowship will allow the successful applicant to gain further experience as an independent specialist. Teaching and supervision of RMO's is an important part of the role. The fellow will be expected to do consultant on-call backed up by another SMO. This role is well‑suited to an applicant who is clinically confident, committed to teamwork, and prepared to manage their own patient workload within a tertiary surgical unit. About the Team/Service/Location Capital & Coast provides colorectal tertiary services to both Wellington and central regional patients. Our service has four colorectal surgeons, clinical nurses, specialist, nurse practitioner and an RMO team. We manage patients with benign and malignant disease. Our work is driven by faster cancer treatment timeframes. The Fellow will support work in the operating theatre, endoscopy and clinic setting. Participation in the department audit programme is a requirement. We are looking for someone who can work independently, managing their own clinics and operating lists. Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals – Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua – as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu. Qualifications Completion of General Surgery training (FRACS or equivalent) or expected completion by 2026. Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Ability to work in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Ability to provide consistently high standards of medical care. Relevant experience and training. Desire to work at Health New Zealand.
