Job Description

Sonographer Team Leader Location: North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals, Waitematā District. Employment: Permanent, part time 0.8 FTE (64 hours per fortnight). Responsibilities You will provide clinical and operational leadership for the ultrasound service across North Shore and Waitākere Hospitals, ensuring safe, high-quality, and efficient patient care. The role combines advanced clinical practice with team leadership, service coordination, workforce development, and quality management. Working closely with radiology leadership and multidisciplinary teams, you will oversee day‑to‑day service delivery, support and develop sonographers and trainees, drive continuous improvement initiatives, maintain professional and quality standards, and ensure timely access to ultrasound services for both acute and elective patients. Qualifications Qualified and experienced sonographer with a postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound (or recognised equivalent), current MRTB registration and Annual Practising Certificate, and participation in a recognised CPD programme. At least five years post‑qualification experience with strong competency across general ultrasound, including obstetric, abdominal and small parts imaging. Excellent communication, organisational, and problem‑solving skills; a collaborative and patient‑centred approach; and ability to lead, support and develop others within a multidisciplinary environment. Commitment to quality improvement, cultural responsiveness, and equitable health outcomes. Ideally, specialist ultrasound expertise, experience teaching or mentoring sonographers, MRTB supervisor status, and/or recognised specialist postgraduate qualification. About the Service The Ultrasound Service at Health New Zealand Waitematā operates across 11 scanning rooms, including nine ultrasound rooms within radiology and dedicated antenatal clinic scanning services for maternity. Sonographers work closely with RMOs and SMOs and support our mammography department for breast ultrasound examinations. The service receives approximately 3,400 ultrasound referrals each month and cares for around 1,760 patients across our sites. Efforts are underway to expand elective weekend ultrasound services.
