Lead Ophthalmic Photographer – Whangarei Location: Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand. Employment: Full‑time, on‑site, 40 hours per week (Mon–Fri, 8:00‑16:30). Permanent. About the Role As an experienced Ophthalmic Photographer, you will take ophthalmic images of patients with diabetes for the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy and other ocular pathologies. You will provide a patient‑centred service by completing screening, delivering results, and maintaining high accuracy and professional standards. The role leads service provision across relevant clinical areas to ensure high‑quality clinical images are captured, processed, and stored to support clinical decision‑making. You will also provide clinical leadership and support to less experienced medical photographers. Salary: $91,427 per annum. Travel and accommodation costs, where required, are covered under the organisation’s Travel Policy. Responsibilities Capture retinal images in accordance with diabetic retinal screening protocols. Process and store images to support clinical grading and decision‑making. Provide clinical leadership and support to junior staff. Mentor, train, supervise, or assess less experienced staff in ophthalmic imaging techniques. Contribute to service development, protocol setting, quality assurance, audit, and standardisation of imaging practice. Travel to rural clinics within Northland as required. Qualifications and Experience Relevant tertiary qualifications in health, science, imaging, photography, or a related field (certificate or diploma in ophthalmic technology). Demonstrated knowledge of retinal photography and ophthalmic imaging techniques, particularly those used in diabetic retinal screening programmes (e.g., fundus photography). Demonstrated understanding of diabetic retinal screening principles, including image capture standards, grading requirements, and referral pathways. Minimum of five years’ experience in retinal photography or ophthalmic imaging within a diabetic retinal screening service, ophthalmology service, or comparable clinical environment. Proven experience performing high‑quality fundus imaging in accordance with standardised protocols and producing images suitable for clinical grading and diagnosis. Experience mentoring, training, supervising or assessing less experienced staff in ophthalmic imaging techniques and clinical practice. Experience contributing to service development, protocol setting, quality assurance, audit or standardisation of imaging practice. • Desired (not essential): Qualification in ophthalmic technology or related ophthalmic/technical discipline. • Desired (not essential): Accredited membership in the Ophthalmic Photographers Society. • Desired (not essential): Current CPR certification. • Desired (not essential): Experience working with high‑needs populations, demonstrating commitment to equity and improving access and outcomes for Māori and other priority groups.
