Job Description

Dam Safety Engineering Intern About us At Te Mata Hiko (Contact Energy), we believe home is the most important place in the world. It's all part of our vision to leave Aotearoa better than we found it. We're a power, mobile, and broadband company, but we're so much more than that. We're focused on creating a more sustainable energy system for Aotearoa, helping customers navigate the energy transition, and building a business that's ready for the future. The opportunity Our Summer Internship Programme is designed to give you real-world experience, meaningful work, and opportunities to learn from some of the best people in the industry. As a Dam Safety Engineering Intern, you’ll help support the future of dam safety across our major hydro assets while building practical experience in both field and office environments. We have two Dam Safety Engineering Intern positions available, one based in Clyde and one based in Tauranga. From day one, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers, support real dam safety projects, and contribute to work that helps keep nationally significant infrastructure safe, reliable and ready for the future. You will be involved in: Supporting dam safety inspections, monitoring activities and site visits alongside experienced engineers. Helping gather, organise and analyse dam safety information, technical data and documentation. Contributing to emergency management document updates, dam safety review preparation, technical memos and project planning. Learning about environmental, regulatory and operational considerations through work with engineers, station teams and local stakeholders. No two internships are the same, but every intern has the opportunity to learn, grow and make a genuine impact. In Tauranga, the work is expected to focus more on dam safety review preparation, documentation, environmental and consent-related support. In Clyde, the work is expected to include more field-based monitoring, landslide and catchment-related activities, and technical research. In both locations, most field activities will be completed alongside experienced staff. About you We are seeking applications from students studying Civil Engineering, Natural Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. This role would suit someone who enjoys a mix of technical work, practical problem solving, outdoor environments and working with people across different teams. We can equip you with the skills needed to excel in this internship and beyond. What truly matters to us is inclusivity and diversity of thought, so it is important to just be yourself! We're looking for people who bring curiosity, fresh thinking and a willingness to learn. We value diverse perspectives and know that great ideas can come from anywhere, so we encourage you to bring your authentic self to work. If our values of Own the Future, Brave Humility, and Performance Edge resonate with you, we'd love to hear from you. Ideally, you are: A confident communicator who can build positive relationships with team members, operational staff and stakeholders. Curious, self-motivated and comfortable taking ownership of tasks while knowing when to ask for support. Organised and practical, with the ability to manage work independently and produce clear technical documentation. Comfortable working in both office and field environments, with basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills. Familiarity with ArcGIS or a full driver’s licence would be helpful. Our Story At Contact, we're focused on creating a better future for New Zealand. Through Contact31, we're building on our strengths as New Zealand's geothermal leader, growing renewable generation, investing in energy flexibility, helping customers transition to smarter energy use, and creating an organisation powered by great people, technology and innovation. It's an exciting time to join us, and we'd love you to be part of the journey. Ready to Apply? Our summer internship programme is expected to run from late November through to mid-February. You’ll start with a virtual induction where you’ll learn about our Contact story, connect with other interns and graduates, and hear from leaders about what to expect. Throughout the internship, you’ll have assigned tasks, responsibilities and projects to complete, an online learning pathway, and a dedicated buddy to help support you along the way. So, what do you think? This is an opportunity to make a real impact while developing practical engineering experience over summer. If you’re interested in dam safety, sustainability, infrastructure and outdoor field-based work, and you’re keen to be based in either Clyde or Tauranga, we’d love to hear from you. Please note, only candidates with the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered for this role. #J-18808-Ljbffr
