Job Description

We plan, build, and maintain the National Grid – a network of over 12,000 kilometres of transmission lines and more than 170 substations that transport electricity from generation to local distribution companies and major industrial users. Team & Role The Environment Group’s teams support responsible infrastructure delivery across Aotearoa. This role leads a specialist environmental planning team based in Wellington or Christchurch, working closely with field delivery, construction and project teams to embed strong planning and consenting practice into day‑to‑day delivery. Responsibilities Lead a specialist environmental planning team nationwide, ensuring environmental requirements are understood, proportionate and embedded in delivery decisions. Apply RMA, consenting or infrastructure delivery experience to critical grid work and translate environmental obligations into practical solutions. Elevate team throughput and risk‑based decision‑making, moving from compliance‑led activity to outcome‑driven performance. Balance environmental outcomes with safety, cost, programme and operational imperatives while ensuring regulatory compliance. Qualifications Tertiary qualification in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Resource Management or related discipline. Strong knowledge of New Zealand planning and consenting frameworks, including the Resource Management Act and practical implementation of statutory approvals. Experience applying planning, consenting or environmental requirements in infrastructure, utilities, construction, maintenance, operations or similar complex delivery environments. Evidence of risk‑based prioritisation, process improvement and throughput uplift or moving a team from compliance‑led activity to more outcome‑led performance. People leadership, coaching or technical leadership experience, including setting expectations, building capability, managing workload and maintaining accountability. Confidence influencing operational, project, field, contractor, council, iwi or internal stakeholders where environmental, regulatory, safety, cost and programme considerations need to be balanced. Additional Experience (Advantageous) Experience with electricity, linear infrastructure, critical assets, outage‑driven delivery, service‑provider models, construction/site environmental controls. Experience with environmental screening tools, GIS / spatial tools, assurance or data‑led decision‑making.
