Job Description
Whangārei, Northland, New Zealand. Fixed-term training position for one year commencing February2026. About the Role The Anaesthetic Department provides a 24‑hour, 7 days per week service to Whangārei Hospital and oversees Kaitaia Hospital, one of our rural centres. The department includes specialist anaesthetic echocardiography, bariatric, and high‑risk clinics and a significant proportion of paediatric, trauma, major general and ENT procedures, obstetrics, and spinal surgery. This role offers the opportunity to work in a rural setting at Kaitaia Hospital for up to 10% of the time. Key responsibilities include: Providing effective and high‑quality anaesthetic services to the Northland community. Teaching resident medical staff, nurses and anaesthetic technicians. Supervising introductory trainees out of hours on a 1:9 basis and supporting their transition to the registrar roster. Shaping clinical focus to match the applicant’s interests, and potentially incorporating Kaupapa Māori research. Location Whangārei enjoys a warm, winterless climate, excellent schools, affordable housing, and scenic coastal areas providing a range of recreational activities. It is a two‑hour drive or 25‑minute flight from Auckland. Qualifications Applicants must have or be eligible for General or Vocational registration with the Medical Council of NewZealand (MCNZ). They must also be an ANZCA trainee eligible to enter a provisional fellowship year or hold a FANZCA/overseas equivalent qualification. Overseas applicants not yet registered may obtain MCNZ registration through support from the organisation.
