Policy Advisors - all levels (Energy Markets Branch) Date: 3 Jul 2026 Location: Wellington, NZ, 6011 We are looking for motivated new colleagues with strong analytical and critical thinking skills, the experience or potential to work on primary or secondary legislation, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to deliver results. Roles: Policy Advisor – 4 permanent + 1 fixed‑term (12 months) Senior Policy Advisor – 3 fixed‑term (5, 12, 18 months) The Energy Markets Branch has a high priority work programme to ensure New Zealand has secure, sustainable, and affordable energy. You will be responsible for leading or being involved in complex policy analysis and providing authoritative policy advice. For more senior roles you will also coach and mentor others. The open roles sit within the Energy Use, Electricity Markets, and Electrify NZ policy teams to support policy advice on issues including energy efficiency, regulatory oversight, electricity markets’ security of supply, network efficiency, and offshore wind legislation. About the Branch We are responsible for the energy markets regulatory system and strive to ensure secure, sustainable, and affordable energy. Our environment is collaborative and fast‑paced with opportunities for stakeholder engagement. Skills and Experience Required A relevant tertiary qualification. Knowledge of policy frameworks/principles/tools/approaches and experience applying these to policy analysis and formulation. Ability to quickly build knowledge for different policy issues from diverse sources. A collaborative approach to working with others. Excellent written and oral communication skills with attention to detail. Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and their application in public policy and partnership with Māori. For senior roles: experience working with public‑service officials, internal and external stakeholders, and potentially Ministers. Desirable: experience or knowledge of the energy sector (electricity markets, engineering, economics, law). Highlight in your application.
