Job Description
Position Overview Mental Health Addictions Clinician (AOD SBIRT) – Rotorua Hospital Emergency Department, Permanent, Fulltime (40 hrs per week). Rostered shifts Monday to Sunday. The role is part of an innovative Emergency Department–based model to provide screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) needs, focusing on methamphetamine harm reduction. Responsibilities Provide specialist alcohol and other drug assessment, brief intervention and referral to treatment for patients presenting to the ED. Respond to referrals generated through triage screening and deliver timely, person‑centred interventions in the ED and inpatient wards. Engage patients in culturally safe, motivational conversations and support them to reduce substance‑related harm. Coordinate referrals to community‑based services, including kaupapa Māori providers and NGO partners such as Manaaki Ora. Assist with follow‑up in community, home or outpatient settings and build effective pathways to support continuity of care. Collaborate with ED clinicians, mental health & addictions services and community providers to deliver an integrated SBIRT model of care. Qualifications Registered health professional (Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, DAPAANZ practitioner or NZAC Counsellor) with a current Annual Practising Certificate. Knowledge of AOD treatment pathways and community resources, including kaupapa Māori services. Experience working in mental health and/or addictions, including brief interventions and risk assessment. Demonstrated ability to engage tangata whaiora and whānau using a non‑judgemental, culturally safe approach. Strong communication and collaboration skills with ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and across services.
