Job Description

Specimen Services Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician Role: Permanent part‑time, 0.8 FTE (64 hours per fortnight). Work rostered shifts across North Shore Hospital and Waitākere Hospital. About the Role Specimen Services has a part‑time position available for a hardworking and reliable person. You will be part of a friendly, dynamic and culturally diverse team working in a busy, fast‑paced environment contributing to the delivery of Waitematā District’s promise of best care for everyone. This position is a great opportunity for a person who either has registration in (preferred) or is willing to work towards the Medical Laboratory Pre‑Analytical Technician qualification (MLPAT) in Specimen Services. The successful candidate must have demonstrated data entry experience in a laboratory, have knowledge of sample collection tube types, and possess excellent written and verbal English skills and comprehension. Key Responsibilities Participate in fully rostered shifts, Monday to Sunday, including evening and midnight shifts. Work one of the following shift patterns: midday, evening, or midnight. Provide specimen collection and data entry support for laboratory investigations. Operate the Delphic Explorer application as required. Maintain accurate records and follow procedures and instructions with a high level of attention to detail. Shift Schedule Evening shifts: 1:30 pm – 10 pm, 3:15 pm – 11:30 pm Midnight shifts: 11 pm – 7 am Day shifts: 6:30 am – 3 pm, 7:30 am – 4 pm, 8 am – 4:30 pm, 9 am – 1 pm, 10 am – 6:30 pm Work weekdays, weekends, and public holidays at both North Shore Hospital and Waitakere Hospital laboratories (predominantly 8‑hour shifts, with occasional 4‑5 hour short shifts). Qualifications and Experience Medical Sciences (MS) Council of New Zealand registration is preferred, but candidates working towards registration and APC may be considered. NZ residency or NZ citizenship. NZ driver’s licence. Experience and skill in Specimen Services tasks – preferred. Knowledge of the Delphic Explorer application – an advantage. Ability to cover service delivery hours weekdays, weekends, and public holidays. Self‑motivated, able to multitask, work with minimum supervision, excellent data entry skill and accuracy. Calm under pressure, able to listen and communicate effectively, and deal with a wide range of people sensitively.
