Job Description
About the Role - Tēnei tūranga The Energy Markets Branch has a high‑priority work programme to ensure New Zealand has a supply of secure, sustainable and affordable energy. As a member of the branch you will be responsible for leading or being involved in complex policy analysis and providing authoritative policy advice. For more senior roles you will also coach and mentor others. MBIE and the Energy Markets Branch operate flexibly to deliver on Government priorities. While you will have a home team, you will be hired into the branch and expected to support policy work across a range of projects and teams. The open roles sit within the Energy Use, Electricity Markets and Electrify NZ policy teams to support advice on energy efficiency, regulatory oversight, electricity market security of supply, network efficiency and offshore wind legislation. Key Responsibilities Lead or contribute to complex policy analysis and provide high‑quality policy advice. Co‑ordinate and support policy work across multiple projects and teams. Coach and mentor junior staff for senior positions. Build relevant knowledge quickly from diverse sources and apply policy frameworks and tools to analysis. Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including public service officials, Ministers and Māori partners, as appropriate for the role. Qualifications & Experience Relevant tertiary qualification. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Experience or potential to work on primary or secondary legislation. Ability to work effectively with ambiguity and deliver results. Collaborative approach and excellent written and oral communication skills. Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and ability to apply them in public policy. For Senior roles: demonstrated experience working with public service officials, internal and external stakeholders and Ministers. Desirable but not required: experience in the energy sector, electricity markets, engineering, economics, law or another technical background. Salary Ranges Policy Advisor: $75,114 – $93,724 Senior Policy Advisor: $110,098 – $138,028 Principal Policy Advisor: $132,417 – $160,472 Location All roles are based in Wellington.
