About the role We are welcoming applications for a Specialist Anaesthetist (SMO) to join the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Taranaki. The department supports a wide range of clinical services including anaesthesia, perioperative and pain medicine, and intensive care. Responsibilities Provide anaesthesia, perioperative, pain medicine, and intensive care services as part of a multidisciplinary team. Participate in an intensive‑care daytime roster and an after‑hours 1:7 on‑call roster. Respond swiftly and effectively to emergency situations and provide expert medical care to critical patients in the ICU. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans. Contribute to clinical practice improvement, education, quality improvement, and research initiatives. Qualifications and Experience Specialist anaesthetist with SMO designation and clinical experience in intensive care. Senior experience in providing intensive care for patients with acute, severe, and life‑threatening conditions. Eligible for an Annual Practicing Certificate with relevant vocational scope with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Strong teamwork skills, collaborative practice, and respect across disciplines. Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education and professional development. About the Team / Service / Location The successful candidate will join a team of seven anaesthetists with intensive‑care skills and two intensivists. Our ICU is progressing towards CICM C6 accreditation and is expanding with a green‑certified new build in May 2026, featuring 16 individual closed‑glass bed spaces, ventilated ICU beds, a paediatric ICU room, a bariatric room, CCU, and HDU beds. The unit is also pandemic‑ready with negative pressure rooms.
