Job Description

The School of Food Technology and Natural Sciences, Chemistry Group, Massey University, are seeking applications for the position of Senior Research Technician. This position leads the delivery of analytical chemistry services by overseeing instrumentation and methodologies, supporting research and external clients, and providing expert training to ensure accurate, high-quality, and timely analytical outcomes. This is a full-time, permanent position based on the Manawatu campus in Palmerston North. Mo tenei turanga mahi | About the role This role supports high-quality research and external partnerships by delivering reliable analytical chemistry services, maintaining laboratory operations, and ensuring safe, compliant practices. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot analytical chemistry instrumentation to support research and deliver services to external clients. Provide method validation, technical expertise, and clear reporting on analytical data and methodologies. Coordinate equipment installation, servicing, and repairs with external engineers and support providers. Oversee laboratory operations, including resource management and delegated Laboratory Manager responsibilities. Ensure safe, compliant handling of hazardous substances in line with HSNO, EPA, MPI, and WorkSafe NZ regulations. Maintain a safe, organised laboratory environment while promoting continuous improvement in safety and practice. Contribute to University, community, and professional activities, including committee participation, stakeholder engagement, and fostering a collaborative, Treaty-aligned environment. Mou | About you You are a skilled analytical chemistry professional with a strong research background and a proactive, solutions-focused approach. You will bring: A relevant postgraduate qualification in chemistry or a closely related field. Proven experience working in a university research or commercial analytical laboratory environment. Hands‑on expertise across a range of analytical techniques, including HPLC and mass spectrometry, with the ability to maintain and manage instrumentation. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage workflows for analytical service requests, ensuring efficient and timely delivery of results. Ko nga hua o te turanga? | What's in it for you?
