Job Description
About the role As an Advanced Technical Officer, you’ll provide high-quality technical support that underpins teaching and research activities across Biomedical, Molecular and Cellular programmes. You will work as part of a collaborative team of technicians, helping ensure laboratories, equipment and specialist facilities operate safely, efficiently and effectively. You will support teaching laboratories and research activities through laboratory preparation, equipment maintenance, stock management, technical troubleshooting and health and safety compliance. The role also involves supporting students and staff during laboratory and research sessions, maintaining specialist instrumentation and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the School. Salary will be in the range of $87,624 to $100,214 per year based on skills, knowledge and experience. This is a full‑time role (37.5 hours a week) based at our Hillcrest Campus, Hamilton. Ko wai koe? – Who are you? Relevant tertiary qualification in a biological or molecular science discipline. Strong technical laboratory skills, ideally developed within a university, research or scientific environment. Extensive experience managing MPI‑approved containment facilities, including PC1 and PC2 laboratories, with a thorough understanding of regulatory compliance, biosecurity requirements and containment facility operations. Substantial hands‑on experience in molecular biology techniques such as mammalian and microbial cell culture, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR and qPCR, DNA cloning, protein expression and purification, and genome editing technologies such as CRISPR. Demonstrated expertise in supporting research activities, maintaining laboratory standards and operating complex scientific equipment. Highly organised, meticulous and able to effectively manage multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance in a dynamic research environment. Excellent communication, analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate successfully with academic, research, technical and professional staff across diverse disciplines.
