Job Description

Embracing a rewarding career as a Consultant Neurologist with Nelson Marlborough—deliver exceptional care, live an exceptional life. About Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders. About the Role As a Consultant Neurologist, you will provide specialist neurological assessment and management within a regional secondary care service. The role is primarily outpatient-focused, with neurologists conducting regular outpatient clinics and contributing to inpatient consultative care when required. Inpatient neurology patients are admitted under General Medicine and remain under General Medicine for the duration of their admission. Neurologists provide specialist advice, with management implemented by the admitting general physicians. As such, the neurologist may be required to review inpatients and offer consultative recommendations rather than assume primary responsibility for care. The position offers a varied and rewarding caseload across a broad range of neurological conditions, with opportunities to contribute to service development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and clinical education. About the Team / Service / Location The Nelson Marlborough Neurology Service is a secondary care service providing specialist neurological assessment and management predominantly in the outpatient setting. The service operates across two hospital sites: Nelson Hospital (serving a population of approximately 100,000) and Wairau Hospital (serving a population of approximately 50,000). Patients requiring tertiary‑level neurological care are transferred to tertiary centres as appropriate. Our General Medicine colleagues are highly experienced and manage a wide range of complex neurological presentations locally, enabling neurologists to focus on specialist assessment, diagnostic expertise, and treatment planning. About you Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent. Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Have broad neurology skills and knowledge of the unique demands in a provincial hospital. Be a highly skilled diagnostician who is a great team player with excellent communication skills. Have neurophysiology skills or experience (such as EMG or nerve conduction studies), which would be appreciated and considered an advantage. Collegiality and collaboration across all disciplines are key to providing successful services to patients and the community. If this is the type of environment in which you will thrive, we would like to hear from you. We welcome applications from our diverse Māori, Pacific, disabled, and rainbow communities. #J-18808-Ljbffr
