Job Description

Strategic Business Partner – Auckland Full‑time on‑site position at the New Zealand Government. This role offers great opportunities for career growth and involves shaping enterprise decisions at the highest level by partnering with executive leaders to translate strategy into workforce, capability and organisational outcomes across complex portfolios. Two senior roles exist with national impact – one based in Wellington and one based in Auckland. Responsibilities Translate enterprise strategy into integrated people, workforce and capability outcomes. Operate at the portfolio level, anticipating and surfacing implications for people and capability of changes, initiatives and decisions. Collaborate with executive and senior leaders to design high‑impact people strategies. Provide proactive advice on organisational structures, investment choices and change direction before decisions are finalised. Partner with executives and leadership teams to elevate performance, refine leadership impact and drive succession planning. Act as a trusted sounding board, giving candid, strategic and commercially grounded guidance on talent, organisational structure and workplace culture to ensure sustainable high performance. Identify talent across portfolios and surface succession risks early to protect leadership continuity. Work closely with senior People & Assurance leaders – including the Manager People Services, Manager Culture & Capability and Manager People Operations & Intelligence – to deliver integrated, aligned and end‑to‑end people outcomes. Qualifications Senior strategic partner practitioner with strong judgement and understanding of organisational strategy. Proven track record of strategic business partnering at the executive level within large, complex organisations, influencing enterprise strategy and structural change outcomes. Extensive experience in senior‑level people partnering roles; preferred experience in people leadership. Skilled in executive coaching and lifting leadership performance. Clear understanding of NZ employment frameworks, industrial and employment relations risk and public‑sector accountability. High ability to anticipate, translate and influence outcomes from emerging opportunities and risks. Experience ensuring leaders maintain fair, lawful and consistent people practices aligned to organisational frameworks and policy expectations. Strong business and commercial acumen, with ability to navigate complexity and communicate organisational trade‑offs and impacts. Understanding of how organisational value is created through strategy execution, change, capability, workforce planning and people insights functions. Tertiary qualification in HR, business or related field, or equivalent strategic partnering experience. Benefits Competitive salary. Five weeks' annual leave.
