Custody Officer – Waitemata (12‑month Fixed Term, Full‑time, On‑site, Auckland City) About the role As a NewZealand Police Custody Officer you will manage the health and safety of detainees while they are in custody and during transit. You will maintain the welfare of people detained in our Custody Suites and Court Houses across the Waitemata District, treating everyone with dignity and empathy. Key responsibilities Uncover and collect information using active listening and communication skills. Maintain composure and resilience in adverse situations, de‑escalating risk and working with teammates. Collaborate with external stakeholders to ensure appropriate care and support for vulnerable detainees. Adapt to change, remain vigilant to detainee needs, and uphold high standards of professionalism. Demonstrate commitment to ongoing training. Qualifications and skills Strong verbal and written communication skills. Resilience and perseverance, able to de‑escalate situations calmly. Strong attention to detail and ability to record information such as statements for court. Duty of care and understanding of welfare, health, and safety requirements for detainees. Strong team player, reliable, trustworthy, flexible to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays. Decisive, calm, and able to think on feet using initiative under pressure. Good computer literacy and accurate typing in Police systems. Special requirements Hold a full NewZealand Driver Licence. Hold either NewZealand Citizenship or Permanent Residency. Be willing to complete psychometric testing. Be physically fit and able to complete a fitness assessment. Willing to complete a pre‑employment medical assessment (including a drug test). Work a variety of shifts (6:30am‑2:30pm / 2:00pm‑11:00pm / 10:00pm‑7:00am), including weekends and public holidays, on a 6‑days‑on, 4‑days‑off rota. Contract details 12‑month Fixed Term contract.
