Job Description

Rural Hospital Medicine Trainee – Full time, commencing February 2027. Based at Whakatāne Hospital in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, this role is part of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme (RMHT) and is accredited by the RNZCGP and RACP. Benefits Accredited RACP Training Support from experienced consultants Recognition by the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine Training Opportunity to work in the attractive Bay of Plenty region with a high quality lifestyle Position Overview Whakatāne Hospital is a 110‑bed provincial facility serving a population of around 50,000. Trainees work within a small, skilled, and supportive clinical team and are fully supervised according to the program’s framework. Rotations (one 12‑month placement): 6 months split (0.5FTE Anaesthetics / 0.5FTE Emergency Department) and 6 months General Medicine. Additional opportunities include Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and General Practice. The role includes 24/7 medical cover alongside consultants, MOSS, and other registrars. It is part of the Te Manawa Taki regional training network, offering further training in Waikato, Lakes, and Bay of Plenty districts. Responsibilities Provide continuous medical cover across all services. Participate in patient care for a predominantly Māori population (55% of ED presentations). Engage in multidisciplinary teamwork with consultants and other registrars. Contribute to building a sustainable rural medical workforce and improving health equity. Qualifications Enrolled or applying for the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine Training Programme. Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Strong interest in rural and Māori health. Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, and teamwork. Enthusiasm for working in a resourceful, rural setting.
