Job Description
Christchurch Girls’ High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora is a leading state day and boarding school for Years 9‑13 students, located in the heart of Christchurch City by Hagley Park. Chef / Baker In this role, you will work closely with the Executive Chef/Catering Manager to assist in the daily delivery of high‑quality food services for our students. From food preparation and baking to maintaining an immaculate, food‑safe kitchen environment, your work will directly contribute to our school’s vibrant hostel community. Hours & Remuneration Flexible roster: Minimum of 20 hours per week during school term time. Rostered days: Days of work span Monday to Sunday, as rostered by the Executive Chef and negotiated with the Director of Boarding. Holiday work: Hours are predominantly during term time, though some holiday work may be required based on operational needs. Additional hours: Any additional hours worked beyond your weekly will be compensated at your normal hourly rate. Key Responsibilities & Objectives Baking & meal service: Lead the production and sorting of students’ daily baking and afternoon tea. Assist with preparing lunch, dinner, or dessert, and ensure items are topped up for the next breakfast shift. Breakfast preparation might be required on occasion. Kitchen care: Wash, peel, chop, cut, and cook foodstuffs. Maintain a clean work area, wash and store utensils/dishes, clean equipment, and handle kitchen linen laundering. Community & culture: Contribute to a positive, caring, and supportive community by maintaining respectful relationships with students, staff, and whānau. Menu knowledge: Develop a working knowledge of the dishes featured on our menu to best support the kitchen team. Safety & safeguarding: Adhere to all school health and safety policies and procedures. Personal Attributes, Skills & Experience Attributes: Highly organised, proactive, and positive with a hardworking attitude. Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure. Skills: Strong time‑management, high attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as a supportive team player. Qualifications: A current food handling certificate is preferred. You must be eligible to work in New Zealand and satisfactorily pass all pre‑employment checks such as Police Vetting and reference checking.
