Job Description
Overview A Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Chronobiology Research Group at the University of Auckland is available for a 20-month project entitled “Spying on the secret lives of bees: Understanding the importance of eusocial clocks for honeybee behaviour”. This full‑time (40 hours per week) fixed‑term role will involve a Marsden‑funded grant to investigate honeybee behaviour by monitoring the patterns of electrostatic field signatures produced inside the hive. The project will use bee spy technology to non‑invasively study the honeybee clock in its natural state, aiming to understand how the clock is controlled and how it can be manipulated to improve bee health and management. Responsibilities As a post‑doctoral scientist you will: Record and analyse electrostatic field signatures and physiological and behavioural data from honeybee colonies. Employ systems approaches and new technology to monitor colony dynamics and circadian rhythms. Collaborate internationally with partners at the Free University of Berlin. Prepare and present research findings for publications and conference presentations. Assist with the design and execution of experimental protocols and data management. Qualifications The ideal candidate will have: PhD in a related field, preferably in insect behaviour or neuroscience. A strong background in developing techniques to record and analyse high‑resolution data sets, physiology and behaviour. Experience with bee husbandry and hands‑on beekeeping is an advantage. Excellent analytical and computational skills for handling large datasets. Benefits Salary range $92,213 – $97,083 (based on skills and experience). Competitive salary with five weeks’ annual leave. Flexible employment practices, up to 6.75 % company superannuation scheme. Career development programmes, discounted car parking, generous parental leave allowance, childcare, and discounts on internal and external services.
