About us Te Maioha o Parekarangi Youth Justice Residence, just outside Rotorua, provides a safe, secure and supportive environment where rangatahi (young people) who have offended can make changes and get their lives back on track. It is a place where 13-17-year-olds accused of an offence stay to await court proceedings or serve a sentence. Our Residential Youth Workers are there to keep rangatahi safe, but they are also mentors, role models and coaches. About the role The Residential Youth Workers enrich the lives of rangatahi and maximise learning opportunities and engagement with positive role models. They work alongside partners to build high‑trust relationships and help tamariki develop the skills, behaviours, and attitude needed to meaningfully contribute to their whānau and community. Responsibilities Ensure that a safe and secure environment is maintained for the benefit of the rangatahi, staff and the community. Support young offenders in their personal growth and rehabilitation with a focus on health, education, training and employment. Work with rangatahi to help them build and strengthen relationships with their whānau and communities and encourage them to act on referrals to services. What you will bring Ability to build positive relationships with a wide range of people through experience in customer service, coaching, community engagement or work with rangatahi. Studied psychology, social sciences, social work, sports, arts or teaching – beneficial but not required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with others in a supportive team. Knowledge of Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori is an advantage. Willingness and ability to cover rostered shifts across mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays. Appropriate physical fitness to safely support and interact with rangatahi. Valid right to work in NewZealand and a full, clean New Zealand driver’s licence. Meet background check criteria under the Children’s Act2014, including a police convictions check where the Clean Slate does not apply. What's in it for you This casual position pays $26.00 per hour plus 8% holiday pay on hours worked. There are a variety of shifts available as the residence operates 24/7. Training and professional development are provided, including a 3‑week, full‑time paid induction programme to set you up for success.
