Open Positions Policy Advisors: Four permanent positions and one fixed‑term position (12 months) Senior Policy Advisors: Three fixed‑term positions (5, 12, and 18 months) Principal Policy Advisor: One position (12 months) All roles are based in Wellington. Applications for secondments are welcome. About the Role The Energy Markets Branch delivers secure, sustainable, and affordable energy for NewZealand. You will analyse complex policy issues and provide authoritative policy advice. Senior roles will also involve coaching and mentoring staff. You will work across a range of projects and teams, supporting policy work in the Energy Use, Electricity Markets, and ElectrifyNZ policy teams. Responsibilities Lead or contribute to complex policy analysis. Provide authoritative policy advice. Support the development of primary or secondary legislation. Mentor and coach junior staff for senior positions. Engage with stakeholders and internal teams across policy areas. Qualifications and Experience Relevant tertiary qualification. Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills. Experience or potential to work on primary or secondary legislation. Comfortable with ambiguity and able to deliver results. Ability to build relevant knowledge quickly from diverse sources. Collaborative working approach. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Understanding of TeTiritioWaitangi principles and their application in public policy. For senior roles: experience working effectively with public‑service officials, stakeholders, and potentially Ministers. Desirable knowledge of the energy sector; experience in electricity markets, engineering, economics, or law is an advantage. Salary Ranges Policy Advisor: $75,114 – $93,724 Senior Policy Advisor: $110,098 – $138,028 Principal Policy Advisor: $132,417 – $160,472 How to Apply All applications must be submitted via the online portal on the MBIE careers site.
