About the Role Job Title: Medical Laboratory Assistant Department: Microbiology Location: The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, CM20 1QX Contract / Hours: Permanent, Full‑time (37.5 hours per week) Salary Range: Up to £25,800 per annum (DOE) The Medical Laboratory Assistant will work in the Microbiology Department at Princess Alexandra Hospital. The role involves routine preparation and testing, basic analytical processes, accurate and efficient sample handling under the supervision of a qualified BMS staffmember, and the entry of patient requests into pathology computer systems (WinPath and Helix). The candidate will also perform clerical and technical tasks, assist with handling and distribution of goods, equipment, specimens and reagents, manage the laboratory users’ Helpdesk, and cover shifts for the 24/7 service, including on‑site testing for acutely unwell COVID patients. Responsibilities Perform routine preparation and tests, including basic analytical processes. Accurately and efficiently process samples under the supervision of a qualified BMS staffmember. Enter patient requests into the pathology computer system (WinPath and Helix). Carry out clerical and technical tasks in accordance with sample handling procedures. Assist in handling and distribution of incoming and outgoing goods, equipment, specimens and reagents. Manage the laboratory users’ Helpdesk. Participate in shifts to cover 24/7 service and manage on‑site testing of acutely unwell patients for COVID. Transfer from the PAH hospital site to a new hub laboratory at Croxley Park or the Halo hub lab in Kings Cross when operational (expected 2026). Benefits Training and development opportunities.
