Summer Internship Programme (Nov 2026)

Our paid Summer Internship is open to students of all years but is best suited to students in their penultimate years of study. Contact are excited to be able to offer the following opportunities to students to gain summer internship experience within the energy industry! Internship Opportunities Geothermal Interns, Taupo – Spend the summer learning about how we operate and manage our geothermal plant, assets and resources in a way that ensures the long term sustainability of our geothermal reservoirs. You will work closely with one of our operational teams (Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Reservoir) and get involved with a range of work experiences which will boost your understanding of the geothermal industry. Hydro Interns, Clyde, Christchurch, Tauranga – Spend the summer learning about how we operate and manage our Hydro plant and assets in a way that ensures sustainable hydro generation for Aotearoa, New Zealand. You’ll work closely with one of our operational teams (Engineering, Dam Safety, Sustainability, Operations and Maintenance) and get involved with a range of work experiences which will boost your understanding of the hydro generation industry. Project Engineering Intern, Taupo – Spend the summer learning about how we create renewable energy sources, and build and deliver a range of power generation projects. As a Project Engineer Intern you will spend your summer working alongside our project engineers as the project progresses from design phase through to construction and execution. You will work alongside Project Engineers focusing on the activities related to the construction of our new 101MW Geothermal Power station. Technology/Corporate Intern, Auckland/Wellington – Work within our Technology or Retail business unit functions understanding how we meet and service the needs of our customers. You could be working on any range of product, data, or customer focused projects. If you are interested in the energy sector and using data to help us drive better business and customer outcomes then this is the place for you. Candidate Backgrounds Engineering – Mechanical, Mechatronics, Chemical & Process, Electrical, Engineering Science. Science – Geology, Chemistry, Environmental, Geoscience. Commerce & Law – Marketing, Information Systems Sustainability & Environment ICT & Data – Computer or Data Science. The programme runs for between 10-12 weeks, commencing in November 2025 and finishing in February 2026 . Our internships are based primarily at our generation sites in Taupo, Tauranga, Christchurch and Clyde , or at our head offices in Wellington and/or Auckland . We will provide you with a meaningful experience that helps you better understand Contact Energy, the energy industry, and helps create a sustainable energy future for Aotearoa, New Zealand.
