If you have a genuine interest in mechanical engineering but are not yet sure what you want to specialise in, enjoy hands‑on work, varied tasks, and solving problems, this apprenticeship may be right for you. Role Summary We are looking for expressions of interest from people eager to learn, enjoy working with their hands, and want to develop valuable trade skills through a General Engineering Apprenticeship based in Christchurch. Responsibilities Fitting and assembly Machine shop work Service and repair Manufacturing General fabrication of machines and equipment, including hydraulics and pneumatics Qualifications Committed to 3–4 years of study while working full time Interested in mechanical engineering Have a restricted or full drivers’ licence Completed a pre‑trade course or have experience in the trades or mechanical engineering industry Benefits Hands‑on training and support from qualified tradespeople and experienced mentors Start earning straight away Qualification cost covered Safety gear provided Tool allowance on top of your pay (you don't have to pay it back) Additional Information Pre‑employment testing, including criminal background, medical and drug testing, will form part of the eligibility process. FAQ How long does an apprenticeship take to complete? 3–4 years, potentially shorter if you have completed a level 3 pre‑trade qualification. How much do apprenticeships pay? Compensation varies by host company, but most apprentices earn $41,000–$52,000 annually, depending on skill level and the company’s financial capacity. Is there an upper age limit for apprenticeships? None. Anyone aged 16 or over with the right to permanently live and work in New Zealand can undertake an apprenticeship. Do I need my own tools? Some companies provide tools; others require you to have your own. It is always good to build a supply of your own for the future. What qualifications do I need to get an ATNZ apprenticeship? No qualifications are necessary. We are looking for people with a great attitude and a good work ethic who want to be hands‑on and earn something they are passionate about. Are there any fees for being an ATNZ apprentice? Apprentices pay no fees, whether you are employed by ATNZ or through your current employer. What happens if my host company does not have enough work for me? If your host company can’t continue employing you, we will do our best to place you with another host company.
