Refugee Support Volunteer - Palmerston North

Join our Refugee Support Volunteer Team in Palmerston North! We are urgently looking for more volunteers to join our team to support the arrival of former refugee families to Palmerston North. You will need to attend training sessions before becoming a Refugee Support Volunteer Role description You’ll need to be flexible. There are no set shift times for this role. The time you spend with a family will vary week to week. Your tasks You’ll be helping people navigate life in a new country, which might include: Setting up a home for a family or individual before they move in. Helping with grocery shopping and finding local markets and specialty stores. Helping navigate the city, including using public transport. Connecting people with local services, community events and activities. Learning about another culture and sharing your own. Being friendly, welcoming and supportive. Location Refugee Support Volunteers mostly serve out in the community based on the families needs. Volunteer training and meetings are hosted at the Red Cross Service Centre. Volunteer requirements and training You’ll receive comprehensive training in how to give practical and social support, as well as intercultural practice. Training takes approximately 8 hours. Training dates: 9am-1pm Thursday 6th August 9am-1pm Friday 7th August Volunteer training will take place in the First Aid Training Room at the Red Cross Service Centre, 245 Main St, Palmerston North.
