Job Description
Postdoctoral Fellow – Anatomy Location: Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. Fixed term 2.5 years (1 September 2026 – 28 February 2029). Salary $92,350 per annum. Full‑time (1.0 FTE). About the Department The Department of Anatomy at the University of Otago is one of the largest departments in the university, contributing to national and international research and to undergraduate and postgraduate education across multiple health and science disciplines. Role Overview As a Postdoctoral Fellow you will lead a Marsden‑funded project titled “Dissecting the Role of Mitochondrial DNA Mutations on Phenotype and Fitness Using Cutting‑Edge Mitochondrial Base Editors”. Your work will focus on developing and applying mitochondrial base editing technologies in fruit flies to investigate the effects of mitochondrial mutations on phenotype and fitness. Responsibilities Develop and apply mitochondrial base editing technologies in fruit flies. Conduct experimental laboratory work to meet project objectives and maintain detailed records. Analyze data, write up results for reports, presentations, publications and conference submissions. Assist with laboratory day‑to‑day operations, supervise and train postgraduate students and staff. Support grant application and scientific manuscript preparation. Work collegially with the extended research team. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all work. Qualifications PhD in genetics, neuroscience, molecular biology or a comparable discipline. Strong publication record evidencing active research at a career‑relevant level. Excellent time‑management, communication (written and oral) and organisational skills. Expertise in routine molecular‑genetic techniques, next‑generation sequencing, transcriptomics and gene‑expression analysis. Experience with database management, statistical and genetic analysis. Ability to work independently, set priorities and allocate one's own timetable. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team and foster a collegial, inclusive environment. Experience supervising postgraduate students (advantageous). Knowledge of mtDNA editing approaches is highly desirable.
