Job Description
Overview Oceanographic Data Scientist – MetOcean Solutions. MetOcean Solutions is a science-based consultancy and forecast supplier providing specialist numerical modelling and analytical solutions in meteorology and oceanography. The role is in our Research and Development team, supporting the collation, quality control, processing, and archiving of oceanographic observational datasets to assist in research projects and daily operations. The position initially contributes to the nationwide Moana research project, in collaboration with major oceanographic institutions in New Zealand. Location: Raglan, with some opportunity to work from other offices in the future. This is a permanent full-time position with flexible hours to suit lifestyle. Responsibilities Collate, quality-control, process, and archive existing oceanographic observational datasets. Provide technical support for research projects and operational activities within the MetOcean Research and Development team. Contribute to the Moana research project (www.moanaproject.org) in collaboration with partner institutions. Qualifications and Skills Minimum of Master’s degree (M.Sc) in physical oceanography or related field. Experience working with large geophysical datasets. Proficiency in Python and NetCDF. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Willingness to work in an operational setting and to travel domestically to meet with partners. Good interpersonal skills for liaising with project partners. Ability to prioritise tasks and manage projects in a timely fashion; works well with minimal supervision. Curious, proactive, and collaborative mindset. Beneficial but not essential Experience working with oceanographic datasets. Knowledge of oceanographic data quality control practices. Experience in operational oceanography or ocean observing systems. Knowledge of coastal ocean dynamics through modelling or observing. Experience with Matlab. Candidate Qualities Creative problem-solver with high attention to detail. Integrity, adaptability, and the ability to work on multiple projects.
