Job Description

About us Southern Cross Health Insurance is shaping a healthier Aotearoa New Zealand. Our purpose is simple: empowering our members to live well for longer. We give peace of mind through timely access to quality care, inspire healthier living, and lead positive change across the health system. As a New Zealand‑owned, member‑based organization, we are building a future where well‑being is at the heart of everything we do – delivering exceptional value for our members and creating an environment where our people thrive. Join us to grow, make an impact, and be proud of the difference you make. About the role Southern Cross is guided by purpose, powered by people and technology. As the Security Architect, you will shape and build secure, resilient technology across a wide range of platforms and initiatives – from new capabilities to legacy system modernisation or retirement. This is a senior, hands‑on architecture role that works directly with engineers and delivery teams. What you’ll do Partner with product, platform, data and engineering teams to embed security early in design. Review designs, integrations, data flows and identity models to identify risk and recommend proportionate mitigations. Develop reusable security patterns, guardrails and decision records to help teams deliver consistently. Assess emerging risk areas such as AI‑enabled capability, supply chain and identity as they arise. Advise technology and delivery leaders on trade‑offs, remediation priorities and residual risk. Build team capability by coaching others on common security patterns, failure modes and attacker behaviours. Build trust so stakeholders seek you out early in projects. What you’ll bring Solid experience in security architecture or a closely related senior technical security role across cloud, identity, applications and infrastructure. Experience in complex, regulated or high‑trust environments (health, insurance, financial services, government) and at least one major cloud provider (AWS or Azure). Working knowledge of compliance frameworks such as ISO27001:2022, PCI DSS, CIS and/or NIST. Track record of translating technical risk into plain language for engineers and senior stakeholders. Collaborative, respectful working style that can hold a firm line on risk without becoming a blocker. Relevant certification (e.g. CISSP) and comfort operating in a hybrid on‑premises / cloud environment is a bonus but not required. Why join us Join a small, stable team that has navigated genuine change together, enjoys real trust and autonomy, and invests in professional development – with dedicated time each quarter to grow your own capability. Southern Cross has been recognised in 2026 with strong rankings in reputation and trust, and our teams are growing while our employer brand gains traction. Benefits Five days of wellbeing leave per year. Health insurance for you and your immediate whānau. Life insurance cover and discounts on pet and travel insurance. Extra parental leave benefits and financial wellbeing support. Participation in the workplace wellbeing programme. Opportunity to purchase flexi leave for study, volunteering or supporting your whānau. An annual volunteer day to contribute to a cause with your team. This role is Auckland based. Remote options are not available. If you share our commitment to inclusion and belonging, we would love to hear from you. Southern Cross is proud to have taken the Pride Pledge and facilitates an active employee‑led Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Forum that includes our Rainbow Network, Māori Network, Pasifika Collective and Neurodiversity and Whānau Support networks. #J-18808-Ljbffr
