Te Whiwhinga mahi – The Opportunity – Public Transport Operations Lead The purpose of this role is to lead, influence, and manage public transport operations through real time response, operational readiness planning, service continuity management and customer information delivery. This is a decision-making role working collaboratively with PT operators, roading contractors and teams across AT to manage real‑time performance, mitigate network disruptions and manage incidents. This role requires a strong operations leader to assimilate information from multiple sources, communicate clear, factual and timely information to ensure customers are informed and disruption is minimised. This role offers an opportunity to support Auckland Transport through a period of significant network change and operational transformation. Key tasks will include: Develop, review and exercise operational readiness plans, contingency plans and disruptions responses to support major network changes, infrastructure projects and planned/special events. Validate and verify PT incidents and work collaboratively with colleagues within ATOC, AROC, and across AT to respond and recover. Direct and coordinate PT operational response during incidents ensuring service continuity is maintained and impacts on customers, operators and facilities are minimised, often in high-pressure situations. Provide expert PT advice to key stakeholders in relation to operational planning, service continuity, customer experience and system improvements. Contribute to continuous improvement through operational reviews, lessons learned activities, quality improvement and the sharing of operational best practice. Build collaborative relationships and work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure there is a good understanding of PT operational perspectives to deliver effective multi-modal solutions. Support integrated decision making across ATOC, AROC and transport operators by translating operational impacts into clear plans, stakeholder updates and customer communication requirements. Assess the impact of projects on PT and develop detour routes, contingency plans and communication frameworks for operators, and stakeholders. Assimilate information from multiple sources and apply situational awareness, and predictive analysis to identify opportunities for network development in collaboration with Public Transport operators and AT colleagues. Business degree or qualification in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience CIMS Level 4 or equivalent qualification or experience A current and valid NZ Driver's Licence (or equivalent) Minimum 7+ years in an operational, shift work environment including demonstrated competence in influencing and guiding a team preferably in a highly complex organisation. Experience managing operational incidents, service disruptions or emergency response activities. Has some understanding and appreciation of the workings and functions of local or central government. How the Transport Reform Programme impacts this role: Auckland is entering a new chapter in how transport is planned, delivered, and experienced. The Transport Reform Programme, formalised in May 2026, with some Auckland Transport functions moving to Auckland Council and AT becoming more focused on public transport. As part of these changes, this role is proposed to remain within Auckland Transport following transition. Candidates progressing through the process will receive further information on the proposed changes. If successful, any offer will be conditional on acknowledgement of these proposed changes, should the proposal proceed.
